Applied education

The newsroom was part of the curriculum.

Some of the most important learning happened through real assignments: reporting under deadline, editing other writers, producing video, covering institutions and seeing how published work reaches an audience.

Summer 2022280-hour program

Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation internship

An eight-week funded placement at The Lawton Constitution. More than 60 published contributions, plus photography and video, turned university training into daily local-news practice.

Learning film by making films

The Film Production minor extended beyond classroom theory into independent sets and student-connected productions. Work on Consume included acting, second assistant directing, boom operation and camera work; later projects expanded into writing, directing, producing and editing.

Scholarship-supported study

Education backed by journalism.

Both recognitions were awarded through the SWOSU Foundation's Jack B. Shelton & Walter Crouch fund. They supported work focused on authentic journalism and the pressures facing the profession.

2022–2023

Jack B. Shelton & Walter Crouch Scholarship Award

The application centered on Ukrainian photographer, filmmaker and war correspondent Mstyslav Chernov and the role of visual journalism during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Scholar for the Pursuit of Authentic Journalism

The submitted essay examined structural problems in contemporary journalism. A lightly expanded version was later published independently as Journalists on Fire.

Continuing professional learning

The degree ended. The learning did not.

My current work requires continual learning across search, content systems and AI-mediated discovery. I keep event learning, work-based experience and formal credentials clearly separated.
