Elgin Opens the Playoffs with a Shutout
The Elgin Owls began their 2023 postseason campaign with a 20–0 home victory over the Piedmont Wildcats.
The result extended a dominant season for Elgin and secured the team’s place in the next round of the Oklahoma Class 5A playoffs. By preventing Piedmont from scoring, the Owls produced one of their most important defensive performances of the season.
The video focuses on the atmosphere and decisive action of the playoff game while placing the victory within the broader context of Elgin’s postseason campaign.
A Compact Sports News Package
Rather than presenting extended or unedited match footage, the video condenses the game into a short digital report.
Selected plays establish the pace and physicality of the matchup. The accompanying coach statement adds context and allows the team to respond directly to the result.
The finished package combines:

Production Approach
Filming a live football game requires anticipating where decisive action is likely to develop while continuously adapting to movement on the field.
Unlike a staged production, individual moments cannot be repeated. Framing, camera positioning and awareness of the game therefore determine whether the footage needed for the final edit is successfully captured.
During editing, the available material was reduced to the strongest sequences and arranged into a clear progression. The final result was designed to communicate the outcome quickly while preserving the atmosphere of a high-school playoff game.
Why This Project Matters
The project demonstrates the connection between traditional reporting and visual newsroom production.
Local sports coverage is not only about recording a final score. It documents athletes, coaches, schools and communities during moments that matter to them. Video adds movement, sound and emotion that cannot be communicated through written reporting alone.
This assignment also reflects my broader work at The Lawton Constitution, where I contributed to local journalism through reporting, photography, filming, editing and the production of digital content for online audiences.
